When It's Missing
You start requiring proof before you commit. It feels like rigour, and in small decisions it is. But almost nothing that matters offers proof in advance — not a marriage, not a hire, not a business, not a child, not a decision to change direction at fifty. The evidence arrives afterwards, if it arrives at all.

So you wait. And waiting is itself a decision, made quietly, without ever having to defend it. Over enough years, life narrows to the things that could be verified beforehand, which turn out to be the smallest things available.

Faith is not certainty. If you could prove it, faith wouldn't be required. This means doubt isn't the opposite of faith; it's part of its structure. Researchers studying how people hold religious conviction describe one pattern as quest — a readiness to face hard questions without simplifying them, a treatment of doubt as valuable rather than shameful, and an openness to one's own views changing over time. People who hold faith this way are consistently less dogmatic than those who hold it as settled fact. Certainty is often what faith looks like once it has stopped being examined.

Faith is not the same as hope or trust. These sit close together and behave differently. Trust is earned — it's built on a record, and it's reasonable to withdraw it when the record changes. Hope is about outcomes: the belief that things could turn out well. Faith is neither. It's a commitment made where proof isn't available, and held when the evidence has gone quiet or turned against you.

It isn't only religious, and it isn't less than religious. For some people faith is specifically a following of God. For others it's a conviction about what people are capable of, or that the work is worth doing, or that a marriage is worth staying inside during a bad year. The structure is identical in every case: something you've staked your behaviour on that you cannot demonstrate to anyone else.

It only becomes visible when nothing is confirming it. In good conditions, faith and optimism look the same. The difference shows up in the stretch where results haven't arrived, nobody agrees with you, and there's no evidence to point at. What you do then is the actual measure.

That's what faith is — what you keep doing when nothing has yet told you you're right.

A note on too little:
his column rarely feels like a failure. It feels like being sensible. The cost only becomes clear in aggregate, years later, in the list of things that were never begun.

Practical Applications

Business

1. Commit before you're certain, and say which it is. "I can't prove this will work. I believe it will, and here's why. We're going." Naming the uncertainty out loud is what separates conviction from naivety, and people can tell the difference.

2. Back someone slightly before their record justifies it. Give the role, the account, the responsibility a little earlier than the evidence strictly warrants. Most people grow into a belief that's been held about them, and almost nobody grows into one that hasn't.

3. Set the review date instead of waiting for proof. Faith isn't refusing to check. Decide, then decide when you'll look at it again — and hold the line until that date rather than relitigating it every week.

4. Write down what you're betting on. Record what you believe and why, before the outcome is known. It lets you tell later whether you were right, and it stops faith from quietly turning into stubbornness with better branding.

Family

1. Say it out loud, and be specific. "I've watched you do hard things before. I think you can do this one." Belief that's never spoken doesn't reach anyone. Name what you've actually seen rather than offering general encouragement.

2. Put your own convictions into words. Whatever you believe — about God, about people, about what a life is for — say it plainly rather than assuming it's obvious from how you live. Children inherit conviction from articulation, not from atmosphere.

3. Let them see you doubt. Faith presented as unbroken certainty doesn't survive a hard year; the first real crisis reveals it as a performance. Faith presented as something you have wrestled with gives them somewhere to stand when their turn comes.

4. Hold the line through the gap. When someone in your family is part way through something that isn't working yet, keep behaving as though it will. Not cheerleading — just steadiness. That's most of what faith looks like at home.
